What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is commonly referred to as "non-insulin-dependent" or "adult-onset" diabetes and is the most common form of diabetes. Hispanics, African-Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders are more susceptible to T2DM. T2DM occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin, or it cannot use the insulin produced properly. The body uses insulin to turn glucose (sugar) into energy. People with T2DM are capable of producing insulin. However, the problem is that the pancreas either will not produce enough insulin, or the body cannot use the insulin created by the pancreas sufficiently. When insulin that is produced cannot be appropriately used by the body, it is referred to as "insulin resistance."

If the body does not have access to adequate insulin, glucose (sugar) cannot be absorbed into the cells of the body and used for energy. This causes glucose to build up in the blood, which causes the body's cells to not be able to function properly. This can result in complications including; high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, heart disease, obesity, and kidney damage. Over an extended period of time, damage to small vessels can even result in blindness, heart disease, and kidney failure. T2DM can also cause the arteries to harden and narrow, which can result in stroke or heart disease.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

In the early stages of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), your blood sugar may rise and fall at a rate too slow for you to know that anything is wrong. Many people also are unaware that they have developed T2DM because initially the symptoms seem harmless. Globally, one-third of people who suffer from T2DM are unaware of the fact that they have it. Early detection of T2DM can help reduce the risk of further complications.

The symptoms of T2DM can continue to affect people after they have been diagnosed with T2DM. In some cases, people who keep their T2DM under control can still suffer from the symptoms. It is important to consult your health care professional if you start to develop symptoms of T2DM.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:

    • Constant thirst
    • Frequent urination
    • Lack of energy
    • Blurred vision
    • Erectile Dysfunction
    • Numbness in the fingers and toes
    • Increased appetite
    • Skin infections
    • Weight loss
